Psalm 144

1 Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.
7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Key Verse:

11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:

Key Observation:
This psalm was written out of one of David’s experiences when he was delivered out of the hand of King Saul. Also it is prophetic, looking forward to that coming day when the children of Israel will suffer during the Great Tribulation. In this time of great distress they will turn to God in prayer.

Memory Verse:
KJV:
3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
NIV:
O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him?

Devotion:

Notice the petition:
11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:

I should point out that this prayer will not be answered until the millennium. It will probably be prayed with fervency during the time of the tribulation, but the Lord will not fully answer this until He brings peace on earth.
Here are the results of the petition:
1) That our sons may be as healthy plants
2) That our daughters may be as cornerstones
3) That our garners (barns) will be full
4) That our sheep may multiply abundantly
5) That our oxen may be strong
6) That there should be no breaking in or going out (“First, That there be no war, no breaking in of invaders, no going out of deserters.” Matthew Henry)
7) That there should be no complaining in our streets.

One day soon we will sing a new song (v.9) to our God. It will be our song of redemption, sweet to his ears because He loves us and will accept our thanksgiving for His redemption. It will not just go on for one year, or a single decade, but will endure throughout eternity. How gracious is our God!

And Can It Be?

1. And can it be that I should gain
An int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God shouldst die for me?

2. He left His Father's throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace!
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me.

3. Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature's night.
Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray:
I woke the dungeon flamed with light!
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

4. No condemnation now I dread:
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th'eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Chorus:
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
